Olive Denton's Story: Sandy is an Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee artist from Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, now based in Kelowna, BC. She feels fortunate to enjoy the beautiful cultures of both. She first learned to bead in elementary school on her reservation, then started beading again in 2018, when she started her business “Olive Denton”.
Sandy features modern and traditional materials in her jewellery, using quills, beads, and home tanned hides. ‘Olive’ is her grandmother’s middle name and ‘Denton’ is her grandfather’s middle name. Sandy wanted to honour them and put that same love into her jewellery. In her art, she sources materials by up-cycling and supporting Indigenous businesses who sell the materials. She loves to bead, sew, thrift, and attend a good kickboxing class.
